What is Samsung Kies?

Samsung Kies — short for Key Intuitive Easy System — is a free, official PC application developed and released by Samsung Electronics. It works as a bridge between your Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet and your Windows or Mac computer. With Kies installed, you can sync contacts, transfer music and videos, back up device data, restore saved backups, and download firmware updates — all without any third-party software.

Samsung Kies connects via USB cable. Some older device models (running Android 2.2 to 4.1) also support wireless sync over Wi-Fi through the Kies Air feature. Once connected, the program displays your device's storage, lets you drag and drop files, and automatically checks for available firmware updates.

There are two main versions: Samsung Kies (for older devices on Android 2.1 to 4.2) and Kies 3 (for devices on Android 4.3 and above, such as Galaxy S4, Note 3, and later). There is also Kies Mini, a lightweight version for select older handsets. It is important to use the version that matches your device's Android OS — Kies and Kies 3 do not share device compatibility.

Samsung Kies is no longer actively updated. For Galaxy S6 and all newer Samsung devices, Samsung Smart Switch is the recommended tool. Kies remains available as a free download and continues to be useful for managing older Galaxy phones and tablets that Smart Switch does not support.

All credit for this software goes to Samsung Electronics. FlashTool.org provides a free organized download hub for all Kies versions along with setup guides and support resources.

Samsung Kies covers all core Samsung device management tasks — sync, backup, restore, file transfer, and firmware updates — from your Windows or Mac PC.

Sync Contacts, Calendar & Messages

How to Install and Use Samsung Kies – Step-by-Step

⚠️Before you begin: Confirm which version of Samsung Kies your device needs. Use standard Kies for Android 2.1–4.2, Kies 3 for Android 4.3 and above. Using the wrong version will result in the device not being detected. For Galaxy S6 and newer, download Samsung Smart Switch instead.

Installing Samsung Kies on Windows

  1. Download the installer — Get the correct Kies version for your device from the download table above. Save the .exe file to your PC.
  2. Run the installer — Double-click the downloaded file to start setup. The installer will automatically place all required Samsung USB drivers on your PC during installation.
  3. Wait for installation to complete — The setup may take a few minutes as it installs drivers alongside the main application. Do not connect your phone yet.
  4. Launch Samsung Kies — Open Kies from your desktop or Start menu after installation finishes.
  5. Connect your Samsung device via USB — Use the original USB data cable. Kies should detect your device automatically within a few seconds and display it in the left panel.
  6. Choose what to sync or transfer — Select Music, Photos, Videos, Contacts, or other categories from the tabs at the top to start managing your content.

How to Backup Your Samsung Galaxy with Kies

  1. Open Samsung Kies and connect your device.
  2. Go to the Backup / Restore tab in the top menu bar.
  3. Select which data types to include — contacts, messages, call logs, calendar, media, and more.
  4. Click Backup and choose a save location on your PC.
  5. Wait for the backup to complete. The backup file is saved locally on your computer.

How to Update Samsung Firmware with Kies

Connect your device to Samsung Kies via USB. If a firmware update is available, Kies will automatically show a notification in the connected device panel. Click the update prompt and follow the on-screen steps. Keep the USB cable connected throughout the update process and do not power off the device mid-update.

💡Kies Air (Wireless): To connect wirelessly, open the Samsung Kies Air app on your compatible Galaxy device and connect both the phone and PC to the same Wi-Fi network. Enter the IP address shown in the Kies Air app into your PC browser to access files without a cable.

Samsung Kies – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Samsung Kies and Kies 3?
Standard Samsung Kies works with older Galaxy devices running Android 2.1 to 4.2. Kies 3 is for devices on Android 4.3 and above, including the Galaxy Note 3, S4, and later. They are not interchangeable — use the version that matches your device's Android version. Check your device's Settings → About Phone → Android version to confirm.

Does Samsung Kies work on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Samsung Kies was designed for older versions of Windows, but it can run on Windows 10 with compatibility adjustments. Windows 11 support is unreliable. For newer Samsung phones and the latest versions of Windows, Samsung recommends switching to Samsung Smart Switch, which is fully supported on modern operating systems.

Why is Samsung Kies not detecting my phone?
Common causes include a faulty or charge-only USB cable, Samsung USB drivers not installed properly, or the phone not being set to File Transfer (MTP) mode. Try a different USB cable and port, reinstall Kies to refresh the drivers, and make sure USB debugging is enabled in Developer Options on older Android versions.

What Samsung devices does Kies support?
Samsung Kies supports Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, S5, Galaxy Tab, Corby Pro, and many other older Galaxy models with Android 2.1 to 4.2. Kies 3 adds support for Galaxy Note 3, S4 running Android 4.3+, and later devices up to those before Galaxy S6. Devices from Galaxy S6 onward should use Smart Switch.

Is Samsung Kies still available for download?
Yes. Samsung Kies is no longer actively updated but remains available as a free download. It works correctly for managing older Galaxy phones and tablets that Samsung Smart Switch does not fully support. FlashTool.org keeps direct download links for all Kies versions.

What replaced Samsung Kies?
Samsung Smart Switch replaced Kies as Samsung's main PC sync and data management tool. Smart Switch supports all current Galaxy devices, works on both Windows and Mac, and also handles data migration from Android, iOS, and other platforms when switching phones.

Can Samsung Kies back up text messages?
Yes. Samsung Kies backs up SMS messages along with contacts, call logs, calendar events, memos, music, photos, and videos. You can select which data types to include in each backup before saving to your PC.

Does Samsung Kies need an internet connection?
No. After installation, Samsung Kies works completely offline for syncing, backup, restore, and file transfer tasks. An internet connection is only needed when downloading firmware update packages through the built-in update checker.
